Hello Northfield Volleyball Families!
Now that the fall season is wrapping up, it is time to start thinking about our winter season. Over the previous few years, our club has grown significantly. While this is incredibly exciting, it does pose a specific set of challenges. In order to meet and adjust to those challenges, the Northfield Volleyball board has updated our handbook and made some changes in regards to the structure of teams.
I highly encourage each family to read through the handbook prior to our tryouts in order to get a full understanding of these changes. We want to make sure that each of our players and families come to tryouts with a full understanding of our new policies.
Last year, we were incredibly short on gym space and coaching staff. This led to the decision to double up practices with each team sharing a court one practice per week and placing 10 or more players on some of our competitive teams. This was not as successful for each individual team as we had hoped and we have decided against this practice for the 2019-2020 season.
Because of our limited gym space and coaching staff, we will only field 6 teams this season. 16 (1&2), 14 (1&2), 12 (1&2).
In order to ensure that our club is heading in the direction of competitive play, we are also going to be capping our competitive teams at 9 players or less. We consider our 12-2 team to be developmental in nature. Therefore, this team may be larger than 9 players. We will make all efforts to avoid cuts at this level.
Based on our numbers last year, however, there is a high likelihood that there will be cuts made this year at the 14s and 16s levels. While the coaching staff and I have done all in our power to avoid having to make these cuts in previous years, our club has grown to a level that we need to make some of these harder changes.
I encourage each family to sit down and discuss these policy changes with your player. Make sure that each player is ready to enter the gym at tryouts knowing there is a possibility that they will not be placed on a team. While I am very excited to see our club grow, these are parts of growing that are challenging. In order to ensure that each player is physically, mentally and emotionally ready at our tryouts, we want to give the information about potential cuts in advance.
If there are any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at Linnoschacht@gmail.com or 507-649-2483.
Thank you so much for understanding. We look forward to an exciting winter season with the Northfield Volleyball Club.
